Plaka is more a small suburb of Elounda, about 4km away, than an independent village. There are some good tavernas here. The water is crystal clear and the beach is made up of smooth white pebbles. There are more nice sand and shingle beaches in the vicinity. Mountains encompass Plaka and the beach is protected from the wind so it is possible to swim in late autumn. A well-known sightseeing excursion is to the Island of Spinalonga (4th photo) which is steeped in history. There was a leper colony there until the 1920s, which was provided for byElounda.
Plaka Bay has been taken over by the luxury Blue Palace Hotel, which blends into the surroundings due to the local building materials used. The Blue Palace Hotel is the top address on Crete at the moment for the discerning visitor. There is a bus service to Elounda and Agios Nikolaos. A little "train" runs between Elounda and Plaka and a small promenade connects the two villages in parts. Plaka is the ideal location for rest and recuperation.
